Hi all,
Hope everyone is staying safe in this new way of life!!! I would like to update you on what is happening with our group.
The education committee has been meeting and is planning to have their second Zoom educational meeting on June 16th with the topic being Hive Inspection part 2. If you would like to be part of the meeting and have not gotten the zoom invitation, send an email to Cathy Schuman at [email protected]
The last meeting had 20+ people on line watching the hive inspection process. The plan is to have this available on our website soon.
Currently the club has 2 hives at Clearwater Farm for educational purposes for their visitors, as well as honey production for the club. This is a 100% volunteer historic farm that is non-profit that does hands-on learning for all ages.
We have installed the observation hive at Myrick park. Although the park is not open to the public currently, they are having a camp for kids and asked to have the observation hive set up. This is being managed this year by Marty Landry, Linda Olsen, and Cathy Schuman. We have been able to get brood and queen donated from Ted at B&B Honey Farm in Houston, MN. Many thanks to him!!
We had a successful regional meeting in March, just before the area closed down due to the pandemic. Tony Bowers, president of the club, has contacted Tom Seeley to be the main speaker for our next regional meeting, currently planned for March 20, 2021. Save the date!!! Dr. Seeley is the Horace White Professor in Biology in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell University. Work is being done to contact other speakers as well. This should be an amazing meeting, so get it on your calendars!!
Sadly the latest news is the La Crosse Interstate Fair has been cancelled for this year. I spoke with Jim Hauser, a member of the fair board, and they reached that decision last night at their meeting. Our leadership has had some discussions regarding our involvement if the fair had been held, and we felt the risk was too high for possible exposure to our members. Hopefully the fair will be held next year.
Election of club officers, as well as our monthly meetings are also on hold until we are able to meet safely.
If anyone has any concerns or questions regarding club proceedings, please contact Tony Bowers- President, Linda Olsen- Vice-president, or Cheryl Friell- Treasurer.
Again, stay safe!
